This Jewish Camp Is Teaching Teens With Special Needs How To Be Independent

Atzmayim, the Hebrew word for “independent,” is an extension of Tikvah, Ramah’s program for campers on the autism spectrum or who have other social or learning challenges. All Atzmayim participants are high school graduates between ages 18 and 23, and they all work three hours a day, five days a week, in the town of Eagle River, about 15 minutes from Camp Ramah in Wisconsin.

Runners brave cold weather for Purim 5K

Frigid temperatures and blasts of wind weren’t enough to keep area residents from running for a worthy cause Sunday morning.About 200 runners braved the cold for a one-mile loop beginning at Congregation B’nai Israel. The Purim 5K is organized by the Sisterhood of the Fair Lawn Jewish Center at Congregation B'nai Israel. Proceeds support the Tikvah program of Camp Ramah, a network of nine overnight summer camps in the United States and Canada for children with disabilities.

Camp Ramah in the Poconos Starts Program for Children with Special Needs

The new Tikvah Residential Program creates a more inclusive camp experience for children with special needs as well as their neurotypical siblings. When kids in the new Tikvah program at Camp Ramah in the Poconos perform in a talent show, it’s not just singing and dancing — though there’s plenty of that. They also showcase some pretty singular skills and abilities.
